Male’: More than MVR 1 million was given to thalassaemia patients in September as part of the government’s monthly financial support programme, according to the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA).

NSPA figures show that 547 people with thalassaemia were registered with the agency by the end of September. Six people were newly registered during the month.

A total of MVR 1,082,000 was paid in assistance to eligible patients during September.

Monthly allowance introduced

The government began providing MVR 2,000 per month to thalassaemia patients in January this year. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced the assistance in October 2025.

The allowance is available to people registered in the national thalassaemia registry maintained by the Centre for Thalassaemia and Other Haemoglobinopathies.

More support for patients

The government has also introduced measures to improve treatment and raise awareness of thalassaemia.

These include screening programmes for schoolchildren to identify the condition, as well as plans to establish Maldives Blood Services facilities, a DNA laboratory and specialised clinics at Orange Hiyaa in Hulhumalé.

The government is also working on a programme to provide free bone marrow transplants to 50 children over five years, with treatment planned for 10 children each year.

The initiatives aim to improve access to treatment and provide additional support to people living with thalassaemia.
