THINADHOO : The Elections Commission (EC) has announced that the by-election for the President of the V. Thinadhoo Council will be held on November 28.
The commission has opened the opportunity for interested candidates to submit their applications ahead of the upcoming vote.
Election Date: November 28, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
Application Deadline: October 26 by 2:00 PM.
The seat became vacant after the Local Government Authority (LGA) ruled that former council president Ali Shujau lost his position. Under current decentralisation laws, a councillor loses their seat if they register with a different political party during their term after being elected on a specific party’s ticket.
Shujau had originally won the council president seat representing The Democrats. Following the official dissolution of the Democrats by the EC, Shujau later joined the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), prompting the LGA’s ruling to strip him of his seat in July.
