Mumbai: Bollywood actor Imran Khan was detained by Mumbai Police on Saturday while attending a protest in Mumbai organised in support of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP).
The actor was at August Kranti Maidan, where protesters had gathered to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in voter registration.
Imran was detained along with his girlfriend, actor Lekha Washington, and his cousin Zayn Marie. All three were released later that day, according to Indian media reports.
The protest was linked to allegations of irregularities in the revision of India’s electoral rolls. The party has called for Kumar’s resignation, while the wider controversy has drawn criticism and public demonstrations.
Police said permission had not been granted for the planned protest at August Kranti Maidan. Authorities cited restrictions on demonstrations at the location, saying protests were permitted at Azad Maidan under court directions.
Imran shared a post on social media during the incident, indicating that he was taking part as a citizen rather than as a representative of an organisation.
The detentions came amid wider police action against protesters in India, drawing criticism from several figures in the film industry.
The incident has brought further attention to the protests and the debate over voter registration and the right to demonstrate.
