New Delhi: India’s Gen Z-led Cockroach Janta Party has announced plans for a new protest in Delhi on October 10, as demonstrations against the country’s chief election commissioner continue.
The group is demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over changes to voter lists. It has also called for protests in other parts of the country.
Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other opposition lawmakers were detained by Delhi Police on Wednesday while heading towards Jantar Mantar to protest.
They were taken to different locations and released later that evening. Around 90 people were reportedly detained during the demonstration.
The opposition is accusing the Election Commission of unfairly handling voter registration. The commission and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party have denied allegations of political bias.
The Cockroach Janta Party has announced another demonstration for October 10. However, reports say Delhi Police have denied permission for the planned gathering at Jantar Mantar.
The youth-led movement first gained attention through protests over unemployment and examination irregularities. Its latest campaign is focused on voter registration and demands for accountability from election authorities.
