Rabat: King Mohammed VI has appointed Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri as Morocco’s first woman prime minister, following parliamentary elections that saw her Authenticity and Modernity Party emerge with the largest number of seats.

Historic appointment

El Mansouri, 50, is a lawyer and former mayor of Marrakech who has held several senior government positions, including serving as minister responsible for urban planning.

She became Marrakech’s first female mayor in 2009 and has since remained a prominent figure in Moroccan politics.

Coalition government expected

Her party secured 97 of the 395 seats in Morocco’s House of Representatives, meaning it will need to work with other parties to form a governing coalition.

El Mansouri is now expected to begin consultations with political parties before forming her cabinet and presenting her government.

Her appointment comes as Morocco prepares for major national projects, including preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which the country will co-host with Spain and Portugal.
