Rabat: Pro-Palestine demonstrations were held across Morocco over the weekend, with protesters calling for an end to the war in Gaza and opposing the expansion of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Israel.
The demonstrations were held in cities including Rabat, Casablanca, Marrakech, Agadir, Tangier and Fez. Organisers said more than 70 separate rallies took place under the slogan “Friday for Al-Aqsa and against normalisation.”
Participants carried Palestinian flags and called for an end to the Gaza war, while also demanding that Morocco halt its normalisation process with Israel.
The protests followed Morocco’s decision to move towards upgrading its diplomatic representation with Israel to ambassadorial level, including plans to exchange ambassadors.
Moroccan groups supporting Palestine have criticised the move, arguing that stronger diplomatic and economic ties with Israel conflict with their support for the Palestinian cause.
The demonstrations were organised by groups including the Moroccan Front for Supporting Palestine and Opposing Normalisation, which called for further rallies and marches between September 25 and 27.
The protests highlight the contrast between Morocco’s official diplomatic engagement with Israel and continued public mobilisation in support of Pales
