President of Maldives, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that responsible journalism plays a vital role in empowering citizens, facilitating access to information, and ensuring a transparent and accountable democratic system.

In a message sent on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, the President extended his greetings and best wishes to those working in the Maldivian media sector. He also expressed his appreciation for the hard work and service provided by journalists.

In his message, the President noted that the media is the "fourth pillar" that connects the three branches of the state. Highlighting the high regard given to freedom of speech in Islam, he reminded that this freedom is bound by ethical standards and boundaries. In this regard, the President emphasized the importance of protecting social interests, public peace, and human dignity.

Revealing that establishing a safe and conducive environment for journalists is a key government policy, President Muizzu pledged to uphold the journalistic rights guaranteed by the Constitution. He further stated that efforts to strengthen the information dissemination system under the "Maldives 2.0" initiative would provide additional opportunities for journalists.

The President also highlighted the government's

efforts to address the challenges facing the media sector. These include making journalism a dignified profession with a sustainable income and finding solutions to the financial difficulties faced in media operations. Furthermore, he noted the importance the government places on building an educated generation in the field of journalism.

In his message delivered in English for World Press Freedom Day, the President stated that a free press is essential for strengthening the democratic system and increasing public participation. He also reaffirmed the government's commitment to making the Maldives an information-literate and open society.
