MALÉ: President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has ratified an amendment to the Utility Regulatory Authority (URA) Act, bringing structural changes to the leadership and governance of the national utility regulator.
Under the newly ratified amendments, the governing board of the Utility Regulatory Authority will expand from five members to seven members, and will formally include a Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
Established under law on December 13, 2020, the Utility Regulatory Authority serves as the primary state watchdog overseeing public utility services across the Maldives.
Key responsibilities of the authority include:
Service Regulation: Promoting, developing, and regulating essential public utilities, including electricity, water, sewerage, and waste management services nationwide.
Corporate Oversight: Monitoring state utility corporations and private service providers to ensure compliance with national standards and statutory obligations.
Licensing & Enforcement: Issuing operational licenses, investigating public complaints or service failures, and enforcing administrative penalties against non-compliant utility companies.
The newly enacted provisions take effect immediately following publication in the Government Gazette.
