DETROIT, United States: Former US President Barack Obama joined Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed at a campaign rally in Detroit on Saturday, October 24, as candidates stepped up their campaigns ahead of the November 3 US midterm elections.

The rally was also attended by Democratic governor candidate Jocelyn Benson. More than 4,300 people attended the event, held on the first day of in-person early voting in Michigan.

Obama criticises Trump

During the rally, Obama criticised President Donald Trump’s administration over its policies and handling of government affairs. He urged voters to hold their leaders accountable by taking part in the elections.

Obama also called on supporters to back Democratic candidates, saying the midterms offered voters a chance to challenge the Trump administration’s policies.

Key races in Michigan

El-Sayed is running against Republican candidate Mike Rogers for a seat in the US Senate. The race is important as both parties compete for control of the Senate.

Benson is also running for governor against Republican candidate John James. Obama’s appearance aimed to encourage supporters to vote for Democratic candidates in both races.

The US midterm elections will take place on November 3. Voters across the country will choose members of the House of Representatives and some members of the Senate, while several states will also hold elections for governor.
