SOUTHERN MALDIVES: Two foreign teachers, both aged 52, have been arrested in separate alleged sexual abuse cases involving schoolgirls on an island in the South Central Police region.
According to a police media official, the first case involving an alleged offence against a 16-year-old girl was reported on October 11. The second case, involving a girl aged between 12 and 13, was reported on October 17.
The first teacher was arrested on October 14 under a court order. He reportedly teaches students up to Grade 10, and the court ordered his detention for 15 days.
The second teacher, who teaches English to lower-grade students, was arrested last Friday in connection with the other case. A court subsequently ordered him to remain in custody for 30 days while police investigate.
A resident of the island told the newspaper that both teachers had worked there for many years. The resident also alleged that sexual abuse involving students had been occurring for several years.
Police have not provided further details about the allegations in the report. Both cases remain under investigation, and the arrests and detention orders do not establish guilt.
