ZAMBOANGA — Two students were killed in a shooting at a high school in the southern Philippines on Tuesday, with police saying the suspected gunman was among those who died.
The incident occurred at a school affiliated with Ateneo de Zamboanga University in Zamboanga City. According to an initial police report, the Grade 9 student entered the campus carrying a pistol and rifle before opening fire inside a classroom.
Police said the student then took his own life. The other victim was a male student from the grade above him.
University President Ernald Andal confirmed that the shooting had ended and said there were no further deaths or reported injuries. Authorities and crime scene investigators were deployed to the school as students and parents gathered outside the campus.
The incident comes less than two months after another school shooting in the Philippines. In June, at least three students were killed and around 20 others injured when two students opened fire at a public high school in Tacloban City.
School shootings are relatively uncommon in the Philippines, where civilian gun ownership is subject to regulations including background checks and psychological assessments. However, authorities continue to face concerns over the circulation of illegal firearms.
The latest shooting also follows a school shooting in Thailand less than two weeks ago, in which a student reportedly went on a shooting rampage at a school outside Bangkok.
