Thai police officers stand with two Maldivian suspects and seized narcotics, including crystal meth and cannabis, following an operation in Bangkok.
BANGKOK : Two Maldivian men have been arrested in the Thai capital, Bangkok, after authorities seized a large quantity of illicit narcotics during a special police operation.
The Capital Metropolitan Police Division arrested 46-year-old Ali Rasheed and 34-year-old Mohamed Visam on Monday.
Thai news outlets reported that the operation began after a cargo office in Bangkok’s Pratunam area alerted police about suspicious packages sent by the two men. Cargo staff refused to accept the parcels due to a foul odor emitting from them. The suspects subsequently moved the packages to their rented room in the Sukhumvit area.
During a search of the room and parcels, police confiscated 2.37 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine (ice) and approximately 10 kilograms of cannabis concealed inside thermos flasks and children’s clothing.
Thai police released photos of the operation, alleging that the suspects operated a major drug trafficking network in coordination with a larger group. However, both men denied the allegations during police interrogation.
The suspects claimed they were unaware that the packages contained illegal drugs, maintaining that an acquaintance had asked them to ship the items. They stated that they brought the items back to their room only after the cargo office rejected them over the odor. Thai authorities confirmed that an ongoing investigation is underway to determine if other individuals are involved.
