WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has announced that he has cancelled a planned military attack on Iran, saying progress has been made toward a possible agreement to reduce tensions.
Trump said the decision came after Iran and several Middle Eastern countries pushed for a pause in military action, with what he described as the “framework” or “parameters” of a potential deal being reached.
The proposed agreement reportedly includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz and addressing concerns over Iran’s nuclear programme. However, Iran has not publicly confirmed the agreement, and negotiations remain uncertain.
The announcement follows a period of rising tensions and fears of further escalation between the US and Iran. Trump said the suspension of the strikes would allow more time for diplomacy while warning that the US military remains prepared if talks fail.
