Seven senior government figures, including Cabinet ministers, MPs and a senior government spokesperson, have expressed interest in contesting for vice president posts in the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) ahead of the party's congress next month.

MALÉ, Maldives: Seven senior figures from the government and the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC), including Cabinet ministers, Members of Parliament and a senior government spokesperson, have expressed interest in contesting for the party’s vice president positions.
Those seeking the posts are Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed, Sports Minister Abdulla Rafiu, Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam, Senior Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu), and MPs Fathimath Saudha, Asma Rasheed and Ibrahim Shujau.
Under the PNC constitution, the party’s vice presidents are elected by its council. The party currently has six vice presidents, with several expected to seek another term.
The PNC congress is scheduled to take place from September 15 to 18, following the completion of the party’s internal elections, which saw more than 2,500 representatives elected from 131 constituencies.
