Scientists Document Rare Oceanic Whitetip Shark Jump In Maldives Ocean Research Paper

Divers from Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah recorded rare footage of a female oceanic whitetip shark breaching nearly two meters out of the ocean between Fuvahmulah and Huvadhoo Atoll. The event was formally documented in the scientific journal Pacific Conservation Biology by researchers from Qatar University and MARECO.

Divers near Fuvahmulah recorded an oceanic whitetip shark leaping nearly two meters above the sea surface, a rare marine behavior now documented in an international scientific journal.

Local divers with Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah and Nature Friends of Maldives witnessed a rare marine sighting when an oceanic whitetip shark launched out of the water between Fuvahmulah and Huvadhoo Atoll.

Diver Ahmed Inah and colleague Ali Ansaaru Ahmed captured underwater video showing the female shark rotating rapidly as it breached the ocean surface. The sighting has since been recorded in a research paper published in the scientific journal Pacific Conservation Biology by marine experts from Qatar University and MARECO.

Expert Analysis and Potential Causes

Marine scientists note that while species like great white and thresher sharks frequently leap from the water, breaching is extremely rare for oceanic white tips due to the heavy energy expenditure involved.

While shark breaching can occur during hunting or intraspecific communication, researchers do not believe either factor caused this event. Instead, experts suggest the shark likely breached to dislodge the pilot fish attached to its fin or due to stress caused by a fishing hook and line observed on its jaw. Researchers hope future tagging programs will provide further insights into open-ocean shark behavior.

Key Scientific Findings and Observation Details

  • Location: Open waters between Gn. Fuvahmulah and Huvadhoo Atoll.
  • Observed Species: Female Oceanic Whitetip Shark (Carcharhinus longimanus).
  • Estimated Breach Height: Approximately 2 meters above the sea surface.
  • Accompanying Marine Life: A pilot fish (Naucrates ductor) detached from the shark during the leap.
  • Participating Research Organizations: Qatar University, MARECO, Nature Friends of Maldives, and Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah.
