MALÉ: President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu officially laid the foundation stone for the largest mosque in the Maldives, named “Jamia Al Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu Al Auzam,” in Hulhumalé Phase 2 today.
The ceremony was attended by Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, Chief Executive Officer of Al Rajhi Company Bandar Abdulallah Al-Rajhi, Saudi Ambassador to the Maldives Yahya Hassan Al-Qahtani, and HDC Managing Director Ali Zuhair, alongside cabinet ministers and senior government officials.
Designed to accommodate approximately 10,000 worshippers at once in its main prayer hall, the multi-functional Islamic complex will serve as a hub for education, cultural preservation, and community events.
The complex will house administrative offices for imams and staff, an Islamic library, a cultural center, and a dedicated Quran museum displaying historical Islamic artifacts and scriptures. Plans also include an exhibition hall for historical displays, a multipurpose community hall, an Islamic bookstore, and a gift shop.
Additionally, project developers incorporated a specialized visitor area within the complex to welcome both local residents and international tourists.
