Tamil Nadu: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated and launched development projects worth more than ₹13,000 crore in Tamil Nadu, including a new stretch of the Chennai Metro and improvements to road, railway and port infrastructure.

The projects were announced during Modi’s visit to Chennai on October 11. He said the initiatives were aimed at improving infrastructure, supporting economic activity and creating better opportunities for the state.

Chennai Metro expansion

One of the main projects was the Poonamallee–Vadapalani stretch of Chennai Metro’s Phase II, built at a cost of around ₹4,900 crore. The new section is expected to improve public transport connectivity in the city.

The programme also included highway and railway projects, along with the inauguration of five upgraded railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.

Investment in ports and research

Port projects were also included in the package, with work intended to improve cargo handling and strengthen transport links. These include projects at Chennai Port, Kamarajar Port and V.O. Chidambaranar Port in Thoothukudi.

Modi also dedicated the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre at IIT Madras to the nation. The centre focuses on advanced brain research.

Centre pledges continued support

Addressing the gathering, Modi said the central government would continue supporting Tamil Nadu’s development despite changes in political leadership. He highlighted infrastructure and economic growth as important to the state’s future.

The projects span transport, research and port development, with the government expecting them to improve connectivity and support industry and commerce.
