The government has amended employment regulations requiring salaries of foreign workers in the Maldives to be deposited into accounts held in their own names at approved local banks.

As per the amended regulation, foreign workers’ salaries must be deposited into bank accounts held in their own names.
MALÉ-MALDIVES: The Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology has amended the regulations governing foreign employment, requiring employers to deposit the salaries of foreign workers into bank accounts registered in the workers’ names with locally operating banks.
The ministry gazetted the third amendment to the Employment of Foreign Workers Regulation on Tuesday, introducing the new requirement for all foreign employees working in the Maldives.
Under the amendment, salaries payable to foreign workers under their employment agreements must be deposited into a bank account opened in the respective employee’s name.
The account must be held at a bank registered with, or authorized by, the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).
The requirement applies to all foreign employees working in the Maldives, according to the amended regulation.
The change is aimed at ensuring that salaries agreed under employment contracts are directly deposited into accounts belonging to the respective workers.
The ministry said the amendment will come into effect 30 days from Tuesday, giving employers and workers a period to comply with the new requirement.
