Male’: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has called on relevant authorities and organizations to strengthen preparedness measures amid forecasts of increasing El Nino activity and its possible effects on the Maldives.
El Nino is a climate pattern linked to the abnormal warming of surface waters in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean. The phenomenon can influence weather conditions in various parts of the world.
NDMA said the current strengthening of El Nino could have a significant impact on the Maldives, making it important to identify possible risks and prepare before conditions worsen.
The authority advised businesses and institutions to review their preparedness arrangements and highlighted several measures that should be prioritized.
These include identifying potential risks and their effects, while ensuring essential services can continue without major interruptions.

The call for increased preparedness comes as the national meteorological authority forecasts El Nino’s strongest effects on the Maldives in November, with the conditions expected to continue through February next year.
