A huge tree covered landmass was spotted floating in British Columbia’s Williston Reservoir before disappearing from satellite images weeks later.

Mackenzie, British Columbia: A large floating island covered with trees has appeared and disappeared in British Columbia’s Williston Reservoir, attracting attention from local residents and officials.
The unusual landmass was spotted by a local boater in the reservoir, north of Mackenzie. Images of the sight were later shared online and quickly drew widespread attention.
BC Hydro initially had difficulty confirming the sighting. However, satellite images taken on July 21 showed the floating mass in the reservoir.
The island was estimated to be about 140 metres long and 70 metres wide, covering around 9,800 square metres, roughly the size of two American football fields.
By August 5, the island was no longer visible in satellite images.
Officials believe the mass may have formed from material that became detached from the shoreline as water levels rose. BC Hydro said it could have moved into a sheltered part of the reservoir rather than completely disappearing.
The floating mass is not expected to affect the reservoir’s power operations, although officials have warned that floating debris can pose a risk to boaters.
