Male’: The Maldives is preparing to add 17 vessels to its military fleet as part of efforts to strengthen maritime security, Defence Minister Hassan Rasheed has said.

Speaking at the “Ahaa” forum, Rasheed said the military is always prepared to respond to threats facing the country. He said three new vessels have already been added to the fleet.

He said additional vessels are now being arranged, with some expected to arrive in November.

Expanding military resources

The minister said the country’s large maritime area requires stronger patrol capabilities.

He also highlighted plans to use drones for surveillance from the air.

Rasheed said the government is working to give the Maldives National Defence Force the equipment needed to respond to possible security threats.

He said the new resources will strengthen the country’s ability to protect its waters and airspace.
