The Maldives Journalists Association (MJA) has criticized the decision to invite only selected media outlets to a journalists’ meeting with President Muizzu.

Male’: The Maldives Journalists Association (MJA) has raised concerns over the exclusion of some media outlets from a journalists’ meeting scheduled with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu today.
The meeting is scheduled to take place at the President’s Office at 1pm. according to the MJA, the President’s Office sent invitations directly to selected media outlets without posting the invitation in the official media WhatsApp group.
The MJA said restricting access to the meeting based on media organizations undermines press freedom and the public’s right to receive information.

MJA calls for equal access
In a statement issued today, the association said all media organizations should be given equal opportunities to attend journalists’ meetings held by the government.
The MJA called on the President’s Office to ensure that similar incidents do not happen in the future and to establish arrangements allowing journalists from all media outlets to participate on an equal basis.
The association said fair access to government information is important for journalists to carry out their work and for the public to remain informed.
