The Male’ City Council has unanimously passed a resolution to provide venue spaces and refreshments free of charge to island councils wishing to meet with their island residents living in Male’ City.

The Male’ City Council has unanimously decided to provide free venue spaces and hospitality for island councils across the Maldives whenever they need to hold meetings with their residents living in the capital city.
The decision was made on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, during the 9th official general meeting of the council’s 5th term.
Presenting the proposal, Male' City Mayor Adam Azim highlighted that thousands of people from various islands live in the Greater Male’ area, making it difficult for visiting island councils to secure accessible meeting venues to engage with their constituents. Mayor Azim noted that facilitating these gatherings free of charge will build stronger relationships between the capital and island communities.
Under the approved proposal, the Male' City Council will provide:
Free Venues: Open spaces and halls managed by the Male’ City Council.
Hospitality Support: Basic refreshments and hosting arrangements to set an exemplary standard of hospitality in Male'
The proposal was passed unanimously with the full support of all councilors present at the meeting. City officials anticipate that the move will deepen cooperation between local authorities and make civic participation easier for island residents living in Male'.
The decision comes against the backdrop of Male’ City’s unique status as the central economic, administrative, and civic heart of the nation. Spanning just over eight square kilometers across Male', Villimale', and
Hulhumale', the capital hosts over 41% of the total national population (more than 211,000 residents).
Due to the extreme geographic dispersion of the Maldivian archipelago, island residents routinely migrate to or temporarily reside in Male' for critical services:
Higher Education: Over 37% of internal migration to Male' is driven by students seeking tertiary education.
Healthcare & Employment: Male' houses the nation's primary tertiary hospitals and government bodies, drawing thousands daily for medical care, administrative tasks, and jobs.
Civic Engagement: Because vast portions of every island's voting population live in the capital, island councils frequently travel to Male' to conduct official business and hold town-hall consultations.
