GLASGOW, Scotland: Maldivian swimmers have achieved a major milestone at the 23rd Commonwealth Games, setting a total of 12 national records during the competition.

The Maldives was represented by five swimmers at the Games — Amna Tazkiya Mirsad, Meral Ayn Latheef, Mohamed Rihan Shiham, Luth Mohamed Hussain, and Mohamed Aan Hussain.

Multiple Records Broken

Although the swimming events at the Commonwealth Games have now concluded, Maldivian swimmers continued to make history by improving national records across several events.

Tazkiya recorded the highest number of new national records, breaking four records during the competition. Luth Mohamed Hussain and Mohamed Rihan Shiham each set two new records, while Meral Ayn Latheef and Mohamed Aan Hussain also achieved new national records.

Two additional records were set in mixed relay events.

Record-Breaking Streak Began Before Games

The record-breaking run began before the Commonwealth Games, when Sara Mohamed set a new national record in the Women’s Long Course 50m Breaststroke at the 12th Asian Age Group Swimming Championships 2026 in Bangkok.

Sara completed the event in 35.75 seconds, breaking a 10-year-old record previously held by Aishath Sajina, who recorded 37.17 seconds at the 2016 Malaysian Open Swimming Championships.

Four Records Set in One Day

Maldivian swimmers broke four national records on a single day during the Commonwealth Games.

Among the new records was the Long Course 4x100m Mixed Medley Relay, where the team of Tazkiya, Luth, Rihan and Meral finished in 4:31.16, improving the previous national record of 4:40.23.

Tazkiya also lowered the national record in the Women’s Long Course 50m Freestyle with a time of 27.99 seconds.

Rihan Shiham set a new record in the Men’s Long Course 400m Individual Medley, finishing in 5:09.68.

The achievements mark one of the strongest performances by Maldivian swimmers at an international competition, highlighting continued progress in the country’s swimming sector.
