Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will undertake an official visit to the Maldives next week following his attendance at the BRICS Summit in India, marking the first visit by a Malaysian leader in nine years.

MALÉ: Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is set to pay an official visit to the Maldives next week, expanding diplomatic engagement between the two close partner nations.
Anwar will travel to Malé after concluding his official visit to India, where he is scheduled to attend the BRICS summit, an economic group led by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
Upcoming Trip Schedule: Monday, September 14 to Tuesday, September 15, 2026.
This upcoming visit represents the first official trip to the Maldives by a sitting Malaysian Prime Minister in nine years. Former Prime Minister Najib Razak last visited the Maldives in 2017.
The visit comes after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu traveled to Malaysia on an official visit last year following an invitation from Anwar. Malaysia serves as a key destination for Maldivians, hosting a sizeable community of residents and students pursuing higher education and medical care.
During President Muizzu’s visit to Malaysia, both governments formalized key agreements covering healthcare, tourism development, diplomatic training, and political consultations. In a joint press statement following the ceremony, President Muizzu described the signed MoUs as a strong foundation to expand future cooperation across additional economic sectors.
