PARIS, France — President Emmanuel Macron has rejected Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez’s offer to resign following a weekend of violent unrest across France, as authorities reported thousands of arrests and widespread injuries during demonstrations over rising living costs and deteriorating public services.
Nuñez offered to step down following the violence, but Macron asked him to remain in his position and develop new measures to address looting and public disorder.
The decision comes amid mounting pressure on the government to restore order after demonstrations escalated into clashes between protesters and police in several parts of the country.
Nuñez reported approximately 2,400 arrests nationwide following the demonstrations. Nearly 1,000 police officers were also reportedly injured during the unrest.
One protester died after suffering a cardiac arrest during the disturbances, adding to concerns over the scale of the violence.
The demonstrations were driven by public frustration over rising living costs and concerns about declining public services, including conditions in schools. While many people took part in peaceful marches, some gatherings escalated into violence, with reports of looting and damage to property.
The unrest has placed further pressure on the French government as it faces growing public dissatisfaction and calls to address the economic and social issues behind the protests.
