India's Kerala state has donated 600 mango and 600 teak trees to support the Maldives’ efforts to expand tree planting across the country.

India: Kerala has gifted 1,200 trees to the Maldives as part of efforts to support the government’s five million tree initiative.
Kerala Forest Minister Shibu Baby John led the handover of 600 mango and 600 teak trees to the Maldives Consulate in Thiruvananthapuram. Consul General Aminath Shifana received the trees.
The mango saplings were sourced from the College of Agriculture in Vellayani, while the teak saplings came from the Central Nursery in Kulathupuzha. The trees were specially packed to prevent damage during transportation to the Maldives.

Support for tree planting initiative
The minister said Kerala was proud to contribute to an initiative that would further strengthen the close ties between the two countries.
The donation follows a commitment made by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his official visit to the Maldives on July 25 last year to support the country’s tree planting efforts.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pledged to plant five million trees across the Maldives during his five year term.
