On the occasion of National Day, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu called on citizens to prioritize national sovereignty and foster patriotism, warning against historical betrayals that previously compromised the country's independence.

MALÉ: President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has called on all citizens to uphold the spirit of nationalism and keep the “Nation First” slogan at the center of their actions in a official message commemorating National Day.
In a social media address released today, President Muizzu reflected on the historic victory achieved 467 years ago when Maldivian heroes liberated the archipelago from Portuguese colonial rule.
Honoring Historical Heroes: The President paid tribute to the brave national heroes who defeated colonial forces, historically referred to as the “Sea Hawks,” to restore independence to the island nation.
Warning Against Betrayal: Recalling historical events, President Muizzu noted that whenever foreign powers gained control over the Maldives, internal betrayal by self-interested individuals was the primary root cause.
Preserving Sovereignty: He urged citizens to ensure that such bitter historical experiences are never repeated and asked Maldivians to unite in protecting the country’s sovereignty, independence, and national identity.
Preventing Discord: The President called on the public to actively stand against strife and actions that could weaken the nation or cause harm to its people.
President Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed also attended the official early morning flag-raising ceremony held in Malé to mark the National Day festivities alongside senior government officials.
