Heavy rain, strong winds prompt White Alert across northern atolls

White alert has been issued from Shaviyani Atoll to Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll as heavy rain and strong winds of up to 40 miles per hour are forecast today.

Male’: The Maldives Meteorological Service has issued a white alert for several atolls, warning of heavy rain and thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds.

The alert is in effect from 10:00am to 4:00pm today, covering the area from Shaviyani Atoll to Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.

The weather service forecasts heavy rain in several parts of the country, with thunderstorms expected in some areas. Winds may strengthen to 40 miles per hour during squally conditions.

Flooding reported in Male’

Heavy rainfall has also caused flooding on roads in Male’. The MNDF Fire and Rescue Service is carrying out efforts to clear accumulated water from affected areas.

Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious as strong winds and rough conditions are expected. People travelling by sea have also been advised to take extra care and monitor weather conditions before travelling.
