A collection of 688 handwritten notes by Mahatma Gandhi has fetched $1.7 million at a Mumbai auction, setting a world record for an Indian historical document.

INDIA: A collection of handwritten notes by Indian independence leader Mahatma Gandhi has been sold for $1.7 million at an auction in Mumbai.
The collection, consisting of 688 handwritten notes, was auctioned by Mumbai-based Saffronart and is believed to have been written by Gandhi between 1944 and 1946.
The notes were written for Gandhi’s close associate Anand T. Hingorani following the death of Hingorani’s wife.
Gandhi’s messages covered subjects including grief, truth, faith, non-violence and self-discipline. The writings were later compiled into a book titled A Thought for the Day.
The collection also included other items connected to Gandhi, including his portable spinning wheel.
The sale reportedly set a world auction record for an Indian historical document, highlighting the continued value placed on Gandhi’s original writings and personal belongings
