Male’: Former Agriculture Minister Dr Mariyam Mariya has been appointed as an ambassador at large, becoming the latest former minister to receive a diplomatic appointment from the government.
Mariya was appointed to the new position on September 3. The country where she will serve has not yet been announced.
An ambassador at large is generally appointed to represent a country without being assigned to a specific foreign mission.
Mariya first joined the current administration as Minister of Higher Education. She was later appointed Agriculture Minister in December 2024 as part of changes made to the Cabinet.
Mariya resigned from the Agriculture Ministry following the government’s decision to make changes to its administration after its setback in the local council elections held in April.
She had not been given another government position since leaving the Cabinet.
However, several former ministers who resigned around the same period have since been appointed to diplomatic positions in different countries.
Mariya’s new appointment comes as the government continues to fill diplomatic and other senior positions with former officials.
