The Foreign Ministry has denied reports that Maldives and India are planning to establish consulates in Bengaluru and Addu City, saying no formal decision has been made.

MALÉ: The Foreign Ministry has denied reports circulating in local media and social media that the Maldives will establish a consulate in Bengaluru, India, while India will open a consulate in Addu City.
The Ministry said the Maldivian Government has not made a formal decision to establish any foreign consulate outside Malé.
The Ministry said establishing a consulate requires extensive discussions with relevant stakeholders before any decision can be made.
It also urged media outlets to ensure accurate and responsible information is shared, stressing the importance of maintaining public harmony and keeping the community properly informed.
India’s proposal to establish a consulate in Addu City was approved by the Indian Union Cabinet in May 2021. The proposal had been introduced during the previous Maldivian administration.
The President’s Office later said the potential establishment of consulates in both countries was discussed during President Mohamed Muizzu’s state visit to India in October 2024.
