Heavy rainfall has caused deadly C and landslides in parts of India and Nepal, leaving at least 56 people dead in Uttar Pradesh and 12 in Nepal.
Uttar Pradesh recorded 66.5 millimetres of rain between September 25 and 27, far above the normal level for the period. The heavy rain damaged more than 1,000 homes and injured 46 people.
In Odisha, more than 70,000 people were evacuated from low-lying areas after rivers rose sharply. Several bridges and roads were also damaged.
Nepal has also been hit by heavy rain, floods and landslides. Authorities warned of possible flash floods in 49 of the country’s 77 districts as river levels continued to rise.
Power supplies were disrupted in several districts, while flooding damaged part of a 40-megawatt hydropower project in the Rahuganga River.
The latest flooding comes weeks after a major disaster in Nepal that killed more than 1,400 people and left thousands missing.
