Male’: Former Vice President Faisal Naseem has announced that he will contest the Maldivian Democratic Party’s primary for the 2028 presidential election.

Faisal made the announcement during an interview with Raajje TV on today morning.

He also said Male’ Mayor Adam Azim will run with him as his proposed running mate.

Former president Solih’s support

Faisal said he had consulted former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih before making the decision.

He said he had also spoken with senior party members and members of the public about his plans.

Azim said he accepted Faisal’s invitation because he believes the president and vice president should both be members of the MDP when the party leads the government.

Faisal said Solih’s support was important to his decision. Recent reports have said Solih will not contest the primary and will support Faisal.

Faisal is the fourth MDP figure to formally announce a bid for the party’s presidential ticket. Former chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, former president Abdulla Shahid and Hulhumale’ South MP Ahmed Shamheed have also announced their intentions to contest.

The MDP has not yet announced the date for the primary.
