A new 1.2MW solar installation and battery storage system is now operating in Baa Eydhafushi, supporting efforts to cut diesel use and expand renewable power generation.

BAA EYDHAFUSHI, MALDIVES — Baa Eydhafushi has become the first island under the third phase of the ARISE project to begin generating electricity through its newly installed solar power and battery storage systems.
Climate Change, Environment and Energy Minister Ali Shareef commissioned the system by connecting it to the island’s electricity grid.
The installation consists of a 1.2-megawatt solar photovoltaic system paired with a 1.5-megawatt-hour battery energy storage system. The combination will allow more renewable electricity to be integrated into Eydhafushi’s power supply while reducing reliance on diesel generators.
The project is also expected to lower emissions associated with diesel-based electricity production and help reduce the amount of imported fuel required for power generation.
The third phase of the Accelerating Renewable Energy Integration and Sustainable Energy (ARISE) project will extend similar systems to eight additional islands.
Across the nine islands, the project will deliver a combined 11MW of solar generation capacity, making it the largest solar development carried out under a single ARISE sub-project in the Maldives.
The expansion is part of the government’s broader effort to increase renewable energy generation and reduce the electricity sector’s dependence on imported fossil fuels.
With the Eydhafushi installation now operational, implementation of the remaining systems will continue on the other participating islands.
