MALÉ: Former President Abdulla Yameen has strongly condemned the government’s current economic policies, warning that state measures to capture foreign currency will only push financial hardship onto ordinary citizens.

Speaking at a People’s National Front (PNF) rally, Yameen dismissed President Mohamed Muizzu’s claims that recent fiscal policy adjustments would bring long-term prosperity. Yameen argued that forcing resorts to exchange 40 percent of their foreign currency earnings and restricting bank card limits on international e-commerce sites stem from economic mismanagement rather than genuine debt control. He added that the administration treats the public as uninformed while self-promoting ahead of the next presidential election.

“Therefore, with the things they are doing, it really feels to me like everyone is being burned. I do not believe at all that the results they are talking about will come out of this,” Yameen stated.

Yameen further expressed concern that foreign currency shortages are driving up local commodity prices and disrupting business supply chains. He cautioned that extreme economic strain and rising living costs could push society into severe instability if basic consumer needs are left unaddressed.
