European governments have summoned Russian diplomatic officials after Germany blamed Moscow for an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport.

An attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Schkeuditz, Germany, has prompted the European Union and several member states to summon Russian diplomatic officials after Berlin blamed Russia for the incident.
The explosive laden drone was found at the airport on August 4 near a Ukrainian cargo aircraft. German authorities said investigations pointed to Russian involvement, while Russia has rejected the accusation.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the EU had summoned Russia’s ambassador in Brussels. France, the Netherlands and Belgium have also summoned Russian diplomats over the incident.
Kallas said the attack had the hallmarks of state sponsored terrorism and called for a coordinated European response.
Germany has already ordered the closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn and the Russian House cultural center in Berlin. Berlin also plans to seek additional EU sanctions against Russian individuals.
Russia has denied involvement and described Germany’s accusations as fabricated, while warning that Moscow will respond to the measures taken against it.
