The Environment Ministry and Agriculture Ministry have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop agroforestry farms on ten islands under the national tree-planting program.
The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy signed a pact with the Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources to advance President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s 5 Million Trees initiative.
Under the agreement, the Agriculture Ministry will supply 400,000 trees and establish modern agroforestry systems on ten selected islands.
Targeted Supply: 400,000 trees to be supplied by the Agriculture Ministry.
Project Sites: 10 selected islands for agroforestry systems.
Local Nurseries: 10 nurseries to be developed in partnership with island councils.
Trees Planted So Far: 1.8 million trees.
Total Pledged Trees: 5.8 million trees committed by various parties.
To support nursery development, agreements have already been signed with local councils on the ten selected islands.
The Environment Ministry noted that two external contractors have also been assigned to assist with supplying trees for the broader national program.
The government plans to finish establishing the ten island nurseries and begin active planting phases across all selected sites in the coming months.
The joint program supports the administration’s vision to boost local agriculture while preserving the environment.
Authorities expect the project to enhance sustainable food production, build climate resilience, and revitalize greenery across island communities.
