Dr Ali Azwar has been appointed Managing Director of the State Electric Company, marking the latest leadership change at the state-owned utility.
Azwar becomes the third Managing Director of STELCO under the current administration, highlighting continued leadership turnover at the company.
The appointment was confirmed by the Privatization and Corporatization Board. Azwar had been serving in an acting capacity since January while holding the position of Deputy Managing Director.
He replaces Ahmed Shamah Rasheed, who was dismissed earlier this year after serving for four months.
Azwar brings nearly 30 years of experience at STELCO, having joined the company as a trainee in 1997. Over the years, he has held multiple roles across operations and management, including Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Managing Director.
He has also served as an executive director on STELCO’s board and previously held a
non-executive role at Fuel Supplies Maldives.
Academically, Azwar holds a PhD from Victoria University of Wellington, focusing on renewable energy in small island states. He also earned a Master’s degree from the National University of Singapore and a degree from the University of Sheffield.
The appointment comes amid broader leadership changes across state-owned enterprises in the Maldives.
