MALE’: Food inflation in the Maldives fell to 5.6 percent in August after rising sharply in the months following March, according to data from the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).
Food inflation stood at 1.9 percent in March before climbing to 7.3 percent in June, the highest level recorded during the period. It subsequently declined, with August’s rate 1.6 percentage points lower than June’s.
At the beginning of the year, food inflation stood at 1.2 percent, 6.2 percentage points lower than the rate recorded during the same period last year.
In Male’, food inflation peaked at 7.5 percent in June before declining in the following months.
In the atolls, food inflation reached 7.1 percent in both June and July before easing. The latest figures indicate that food price increases have slowed across both the capital and the atolls.
Meanwhile, travel-related inflation remained elevated at 8 percent in August. Since March, the rate had fluctuated between 8 and 9 percent, driven by higher travel costs linked to the conflict in the Middle East.
Despite rising travel costs, overall inflation stood at 0.8 percent, as price increases in other sectors slowed. The figures highlight the differing trends across major spending categories, with food inflation easing while travel-related costs remain high.
