At least 13 people have died after a powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck southern Japan, with rescue teams continuing to search for survivors.

TOKYO, Japan: The death toll has risen after a powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Japan’s southern Kumamoto Prefecture, as rescue teams continue searching for people trapped under collapsed buildings.
The earthquake hit Kyushu Island on Tuesday, damaging homes, roads, bridges and a shopping mall. At least 13 people have been confirmed dead, while dozens were injured and several others remain missing.
Thousands of rescue workers, police officers and Self-Defense Forces have been deployed to search for survivors. More than 9,000 people have been evacuated to emergency shelters as strong aftershocks continue. Authorities have warned residents to stay alert for further earthquakes and possible landslides.
The earthquake also caused power outages, disrupted train services and temporarily closed Kumamoto Airport. Officials said no problems have been reported at nearby nuclear power plants.
