MALÉ: The Criminal Court has scheduled hearings for late September in two pending corruption cases involving former President Abdulla Yameen.

Court officials confirmed that proceedings will resume in both the R. Fuggiri and V. Aarah lease cases under the MMPRC corruption scandal. Hearings in both trials had been stalled for several months due to ongoing judicial appeals and procedural delays.

The trial concerning the lease of V. Aarah was paused while the state appealed a High Court ruling to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court ruled in July that new state evidence rejected by the appellate court could not be admitted in the retrial. Proceedings regarding the lease of R. Fuggiri had also remained unscheduled since late last year.

  • Fuggiri Case Hearing Date:  September 23, 2026 (Next Wednesday)

  • Aarah Case Hearing Date: September 29, 2026.

  • Charges Faced: Money laundering and accepting bribes involving MMPRC resort leases.

In the Fuggiri trial, charges against Sun Construction, Sun Investment, and Ahmed Krik Riza were previously dismissed or withdrawn, leaving Yameen as the sole remaining defendant.

The scheduling comes as Yameen has already declared his intention to contest the upcoming 2028 presidential election.
