A 37-year-old farmer from GDh. Gadhdhoo has been sentenced to 25 years in prison and fined MVR 100,000 for using his agricultural plot on a nearby uninhabited island to store and trade drugs.

GADHDHOO : The GDh. Gadhdhoo Magistrate Court has sentenced a local farmer to 25 years in prison and imposed a fine of MVR 100,000 for drug trafficking.
The court issued the verdict against 37-year-old Ali Shazeen from Nooreege, Gadhdhoo. Police stated that Shazeen used his farming plot on Gan, an uninhabited island located in the same lagoon as Gadhdhoo, to store and deal illegal narcotics.
Police discovered the illicit operation in 2021 and conducted a court-authorized raid on the agricultural area, seizing narcotics and alcohol from the site.
Following a month-long investigation, the Prosecutor General’s Office filed two separate charges against Shazeen: drug trafficking and unauthorized acting.
The court found him guilty of both charges, with the 25-year prison sentence specifically handed down for the offense of trafficking diamorphine.
