MALÉ: The Criminal Court has cancelled the hearing scheduled for tomorrow in the ongoing corruption trial of former President Abdulla Yameen regarding the lease of R. Fuggiri.

The court confirmed that the cancellation was made upon request by the Prosecution. State prosecutors asked for the postponement because the lawyer managing the case became ill and requires urgent medical travel abroad.

The trial involves criminal charges accusing Yameen of accepting a USD 1 million bribe and laundering the funds during the tourist resort lease of R. Fuggiri. Witness testimony in the case has concluded, and proceedings are currently stalled at the final evidence evaluation stage.

In a separate matter, the Criminal Court has scheduled a hearing for next week in the retrial of the V. Aarah corruption case involving Yameen. The High Court previously overturned Yameen’s 11-year prison sentence in the Aarah case and ordered a new trial. The lower court proceedings were on hold while the prosecution appealed the rejection of new evidence, but the Supreme Court recently ruled that the new state evidence cannot be admitted.
