Civil Court Judge Ihsan --

MALÉ: The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has temporarily suspended Civil Court Judge Abdulla Ihsan from his duties for 60 days, starting August 19, 2026.

The decision was made during the commission’s meeting (Meeting No. 2026/026) on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.

According to a statement released by the commission, the suspension was issued under Section 25(l) of the Judicial Service Commission Act (Act No. 10/2008), referencing Section 25(th) of the same law.

The watchdog body stated that the decision was taken based on the nature of an ongoing investigation involving Judge Ihsan and information gathered so far. The commission emphasized that the temporary suspension is necessary to maintain public trust and confidence in the judicial system.

Judge Ihsan will remain suspended from his judicial responsibilities for a period of 60 days, or until the commission reaches a final determination on the matter.

However, under the JSC’s established policies, the commission does not publicly disclose specific details regarding active investigations or cases unless an allegation is formally proven. As a result, the JSC has not clarified whether Judge Ihsan’s suspension is connected to previous complaints filed against him or if it involves a separate investigation.

Context of Previous Employee Misconduct Complaints

While the exact grounds for the current suspension remain unconfirmed, the court has previously faced formal employee complaints involving its sitting judges. In November 2025, Civil Court staff submitted a letter to the JSC requesting disciplinary action against Judge Ihsan and Judge Hafiza Abdul Sattar:

• Allegations Against Judge Ihsan: Staff members filed complaints alleging that Judge Ihsan had verbally insulted court employees.

• Allegations Against Judge Hafiza: Grievances were submitted regarding her treatment of administrative staff, following an earlier complaint against her that was dismissed when staff did not provide formal statements.

• Broader Workplace Concerns: Concerns regarding workplace discrimination, allegations of judicial influence in recruitment, and separate complaints against Chief Judge Mariyam Waheeda have also previously been raised with the watchdog.

Judge Ihsan will remain suspended from his judicial responsibilities for 60 days, or until the commission reaches a final determination on the matter.
