The Male City Council has unanimously voted to direct the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) to enforce safety railings on balconies and windows across Hulhumale Phase 2 residential towers following a tragic child fall.

MALÉ: The Male City Council has passed an emergency motion directing the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) to mandate safety railings on balconies, open windows, and exposed areas across residential towers in Hulhumale Phase 2.
The emergency issue was submitted at today’s official general meeting by opposition MDP councilor Fatimat Zahiya, representing the Hulhumale North constituency. The motion was brought forward after a two-year-old child died yesterday after falling from a high-rise residential tower in Phase 2.
Presenting the proposal, Zahiya highlighted a concerning rise in incidents involving young children falling from upper floors in the area. She noted that international safety standards in developed nations require full protective barriers and railings on all high-rise openings, stressing that prompt action is necessary to prevent further loss of life. She emphasized that municipal safety oversight for these buildings rests squarely with HDC.
In addition to building safety, the motion called on HDC to collaborate with the Maldives Police Service to step up traffic monitoring across Hulhumale due to an increase in dangerous road accidents.
The proposal passed with unanimous approval from all council members present at the meeting.
