MALE’, Maldives — The Maldives has received 880 solar-powered streetlights from China under a grant assistance programme, strengthening efforts to expand renewable energy use across the country.

The agreement for the donation was signed at a ceremony by Housing Minister Dr. Abdulla Muththalib and Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives Kong Xianhua.

The Housing Ministry said the donation would support the country’s efforts to adopt clean energy and promote sustainable development in the islands.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Kong expressed hope that the streetlights would bring positive changes to the lives of Maldivians.

The ambassador also noted that solar streetlights previously donated by China had been installed on three islands. The latest donation is expected to extend the initiative to more islands and support the government’s renewable energy plans.

The government aims to generate 33 per cent of the Maldives’ energy from renewable sources by 2028.
