NEW DELHI: The 18th BRICS Summit is set to begin in New Delhi tomorrow, September 12, with leaders of the expanded grouping gathering for two days of discussions on economic cooperation, trade, technology, sustainable development and global governance.
The summit will be held under India’s 2026 BRICS chairmanship, with the country placing stronger cooperation among emerging economies at the centre of its agenda.
BRICS currently comprises 11 full members: Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates.
The grouping has expanded significantly in recent years, giving it a larger role in discussions on global trade, finance and international decision-making.
The New Delhi summit comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions, trade disputes and uncertainty in the global economy. These issues are expected to feature prominently as leaders discuss the future direction of the bloc.
Economic and financial cooperation is also expected to remain a major focus, including efforts to strengthen trade, improve financial connectivity and expand cooperation in technology and other strategic sectors.
The summit will also provide an opportunity for bilateral meetings between participating leaders on the sidelines of the main programme.
The two-day meeting is expected to offer a clearer indication of how the expanded BRICS grouping plans to strengthen its influence in an increasingly multipolar global order.
