Saudi company to finance Maldives’ largest mosque in Hulhumale’

The government has handed over land in Hulhumale' to Saudi Arabia’s Al Rajhi Company to develop the Maldives’ largest mosque and Islamic center.

Male’: The Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Awqaf has signed an agreement with Saudi Arabia’s Al Rajhi Company to develop the land for the Maldives’ largest mosque in Hulhumale’.

The agreement was signed by Islamic Affairs and Awqaf Minister Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed and Al Rajhi Company Chief Executive Officer Bandar Abdullah Al Rajhi.

The mosque, named Sultan Mohamed bin Abdullah Grand Mosque and Islamic Civilization Centre, is being developed in the area connecting Phase II and Phase III of Hulhumale’.

The foundation stone for the project is scheduled to be laid tomorrow as part of events marking 900 years since the Maldives embraced Islam.

The mosque is expected to have a main prayer hall that can accommodate around 10,000 people at one time. The project will also include facilities for Islamic education, cultural activities and community programmes.

The center will have offices for imams and administrative work, along with dedicated spaces for educational, cultural and social activities.

An Islamic library and cultural center will also be established at the site. The project will also include a Quran museum displaying historical information related to the Holy Quran.

Facilities for visitors

The complex will have exhibition halls for Islamic and historical exhibitions, as well as a multipurpose community hall for social gatherings and other activities.

A dedicated visitor area will be developed for members of the public and tourists visiting the mosque. An Islamic bookstore and gift shop will also be available at the site.

The Ministry said the center is expected to play an important role in providing Islamic education and promoting Maldivian Islamic culture among Hulhumale’ residents and visitors to the Maldives.
