MALÉ: The Criminal Court has sentenced a Bangladeshi national to life imprisonment and ordered him to pay 1 million Rufiyaa in blood money following his conviction for murder in Th. Guraidhoo.
The verdict was issued against Babul Miah for the killing of fellow Bangladeshi worker Shah Alam during the early hours of May 21, 2020. The court established that Babul Miah attacked Shah Alam with a machete and stabbed him twice with a knife inside his residence following a personal altercation. The prosecution proved that the convict actively tried to hide the crime after committing the fatal assault.
Court documents confirmed that Babul Miah confessed during the trial to inflicting the sharp force injuries. The court handed down a life sentence instead of capital punishment after Shah Alam’s heirs opted for blood money instead of execution.
Due to credit for time already served in pre-trial detention since his 2020 arrest, Babul Miah will serve a remaining prison term of 18 years, 8 months, and 19 days. He was also ordered to pay the 1 million Rufiyaa fine to the Civil Court within 12 months.
